Presentation by Adalberto Tortorella at the exhibition of masks and presentation of the book “Marta Díez – masks and sculptures; Rubén Vela – poems” at the 2008 cycle of lectures held at the Daughters of Mary´s Heart Institute
By Adalberto Tortorella
Myth and Symbolism is the history of masks. I do not wish to enlarge on the subject, because all three of them will do so intensively. Yet I would like to say something about the personality of each one. Marta Díez is remarkable in having us go through a time full of mystery. This is the reason why we are dealing with the life of masks, which is surrounded by mystery. Her atelier is close by, on Arenales Street near the corner of Austria Street, and you may visit it at any time, which is sure to give you a closer idea than the few masks that are being shown here today. I wish to mention Marta´s generosity in having all this brought here, having it suitably placed and giving you an account of the subject. I will not say much about Alejandra Vela, because those of you who are in the habit of attending this Cycle of Lectures already know her: she specializes in restoration. She has just returned from Santiago del Estero at 11.45 a.m., after having carried out an important job in restoration. What could I say about Dr. Alejandro Caride? He is a first-class neurologist, he heads the Neurology Department at the German Hospital, and besides he is a potential artist - as is the case with many physicians. I know a great many Argentine physicians who are also writers, musicians, and so on. In this case it might be Marta´s influence, but undoubtedly he has a mind of his own, and I am sure he will have very interesting things to tell us. On behalf of the Daughters of Mary´s Heart , I wish to thank all three of them for their collaboration.
