Who is hiding behind those empty sockets?
By Ester de Izaguirre
Who is hiding behind those empty sockets? A realm of beauty. Not that the eyes may be missing - they are facing inner realities and looking at us. They are there, but we fail to see them because reality sets a limit. Here they contemplate. Over there lies the entire mystery of beauty.
Visiting Marta Díez´s museum does not endow one with the tempered spirits one may have when watching a painting exhibition, or a sculpture, nor is it similar to what we feel upon listening to beautiful poems or being surrounded by Mozart´s music. It is the disturbing beauty of mystery, the miracle whereby symbols, inexpressible feelings, are created.
Hers are masks and sculptures suggestive of the art of the era when rooted man , joined to his outer nature and his own human nature, caught hold of the early mysterious forms of appealing to the gods.
A mask cannot look at us, but its blindness does guess at us.
